Born in Carrickfergus, County Antrim. Served his apprenticeship with Harland & Wolff. Subsequently worked for Vickers of Barrow, Workman, Clark & Co. of Belfast and Harland & Wolff of Belfast. Previously had one sea voyage aboard the Red Star Line steamer Lapland; Titanic was his second voyage. He left two children, his wife having died recently.
Born at Castlebar, Ireland. He received his education at St. Jarlath`s College, Tuam, Ireland. Upon completion of his schooling he spent two years as a clerk in Shackleton`s Flour Milling Co., Dublin before joining James Walker & Co. of Dublin. The Titanic was his first ship. He left a widow and one young child.
